In a recent interview for the New York Post the very UnFunny Adam Carolla said “Don’t hire chicks.” He expounded “The reason why you know more funny dudes than funny chicks is that dudes are funnier than chicks.” Right. Insult an entire gender. A gender full of actual crack-ups like Tina Fey, Rosanne Barr, Lisa Lampanelli, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Jen Kirkman, Betty White, Chelsea Handler, Cheryl Hines, Ana Gasteyer, Lisa Kudrow, Conchata Ferrell, Courteney Cox, Eliza Coupe, Elisha Cuthbert, Casey Wilson…. I could go on and on listing currently working funny females. And I could add to that list another 20 or so not-so-known hilarious stand-up comediennes I’ve seen in L.A. comedy clubs. Not to mention the hoards of sketch comedy and improv chicks I’ve known in the L.A. area alone.
So Adam not only are you unfunny, but you are also incorrect and unoriginal. Jerry Lewis made that same insane claim last century when in 1998 at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen he told an audience during a Q & A session that “I don’t like any women comedians” and “A woman doing comedy doesn’t offend me but sets me back a bit. I, as a viewer, have trouble with it. I think of her as a producing machine that brings babies in the world.”
Judd Apatow remembered Jerry Lewis saying this, so while accepting the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Comedy film, “Bridesmaids” Apatow said: “Jerry Lewis once said that he didn’t think women were funny, so I’d just like to say, with all respect, ‘F*ck you!’”
Let’s hope that when Apatow is accepting an award for Bridesmaids 2 he says something similar to Carolla.
